Chapter Seven

Skye had offered to give him the entire week off to enjoy being newly mated, but Kol had politely declined. Not that he didn’t want to spend time with Remi, but with the Heritage Festival in full swing, and the masquerade ball quickly approaching, there was just too much to do.

There were schedules to finalize, rooms to decorate, competitions to judge, and that was on top of all his regular duties. It wasn’t just him, either. Remi had rehearsals, interviews, and special meet-and-greets with fans to keep him busy.

In short, they couldn’t put their lives on hold just because they were mated now.

Still, they did their best to take advantage of every spare minute they could grab. It was actually kind of fun to find creative ways to spend time together. During Remi’s rehearsals, Kol tried to drop in with food and drinks. Anytime he ventured out to the cabins or the treehouses, Remi accompanied him, though he always stayed firmly on the ground instead of climbing the ladders to the suites high in the trees.

Then, of course, there was a fair amount of telepathic flirting.

They’d been testing their mental bond for the past couple of days to see how far they could stretch it. Kind of like the supernatural version of, “Can you hear me now?” So far, it had proven better and more efficient than any cell phone .

It was just little things, a few minutes here and there, but it didn’t feel forced or uncomfortable. Besides, Kol had spent every night in Remi’s bed since they’d been mated, which usually began with mind-blowing sex and ended with them talking until the small hours of the morning.

Finally, after three days, their schedules had coincided, giving them both an entire afternoon free of obligations. While Kol was fine with their stolen moments and quiet conversations in the dark, he couldn’t deny he was excited for their first official date.

Too bad Remi seemed to have forgotten.

“It’s four o’clock. Where the hell are you?”

“Sorry, sweetheart,” Remi’s voice rang inside his head. “This interview is taking longer than I thought it would. I’ll be there as soon as I can.”

Kol deflated, instantly feeling like an asshole. “It’s okay. I’m sorry I snapped at you. Take your time and come find me at the café when you’re finished.”

“I’ll always find you.” It sounded like a promise rather than a simple statement of fact. “I’ll try to wrap it up soon.”

Smiling to himself, Kol pushed away from the marble column and started across the lobby to the café. It wasn’t easy sharing his mate with the world, and he imagined it would only get harder once they were away from the sanctuary of the hotel. More than once, Remi had commented about how much he enjoyed being free to go where he wanted without being besieged by fans.

Clearly, no one had told him that was because Skye had threatened serious bodily harm to every guest in the place. At the time, Kol had appreciated her foresight because it had meant less work for him.
